World leaders congratulate re-elected Xi

Congratulations have been pouring in from around the world since Xi Jinping was re-elected Chinese president by a unanimous vote on March 17 in Beijing at the first session of the 13th National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature. He was also unanimously re-elected chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC).

In congratulatory messages, leaders of foreign countries, political parties and organizations expressed confidence that under Xi’s leadership, China will achieve greater prosperity and make more contributions to world peace and development.

The following are edited versions of some of the messages.

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani said Xi’s election fully proved that the Chinese people acknowledge Xi’s outstanding achievements and support his wise leadership. Afghanistan expects to deepen cooperation with the country in all areas, he added.

Bangladeshi President Abdul Hamid said that under Xi’s leadership, China has made huge achievements in the great cause of building a community with a shared future for mankind. Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh expects to enhance cooperation in various fields with China.

Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah said that under Xi’s leadership, China has made significant achievements in building a modern and strong socialist country, making major contributions to global peace, development and prosperity. 

Cambodia’s King Norodom Sihamoni said that with Xi’s wise leadership, China will become more prosperous and continue to play an important role in global and regional affairs. Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Xi’s achievements have gained the full trust of the Chinese people, and the country will progress to fulfill its Two Centenary Goals, he said.

The Two Centenary Goals, put forth by the Communist Party of China for building socialism with Chinese characteristics, are to achieve a moderately prosperous society by the time the CPC marks its centenary in 2021, and to build China into a modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced and harmonious by the time the People’s Republic of China celebrates its centenary in 2049.

Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un expressed hope that under the leadership of the CPC with Xi at the core, the Chinese people will make greater achievements in the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era. 

Peace and prosperity

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said maintaining the sound and stable development of bilateral relations between India and China is of vital importance to the peace, development and prosperity of all mankind. 

Japanese Emperor Akihito wished Xi good health and China prosperity. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that as this year marks the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and the People’s Republic of China, he hopes bilateral ties will reach a new level of development.

King Abdullah II of Jordan expressed sincere congratulations to Xi and the Chinese people, saying that Jordan is willing to work with China and continue to build a more beautiful, prosperous, just and peaceful future for the two peoples and the world.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said he believes that under Xi’s leadership, China will make greater achievements in the process of building a moderately prosperous society. He also said that the Kazakhstan-China comprehensive strategic partnership will continue to maintain high-level development with concerted efforts from both sides.

Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah said the Kuwaiti side is ready to further enhance the traditional friendship between the two countries for mutual benefits. 

Lao President Bounnhang Vorachit said he believes that under the leadership of the CPC with Xi at the core, the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics will make comprehensive and historic achievements. 

Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen said Xi’s election is a full recognition of the great achievements China has made under Xi’s leadership in the past five years. He said that under Xi, China will create more opportunities for other countries to achieve common development.

Myanmar’s State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi said Xi has fostered with Myanmar relations featuring closeness, amity, mutual respect and trust. 

Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain said Xi’s election as president reflects the Chinese people’s full confidence in his leadership. Hussain also acknowledged China’s remarkable achievements in the past five years.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that Xi’s successful election as president has shown that both the Chinese people and the CPC have full confidence in Xi’s leadership and plans for the future.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said Xi’s election as president has fully testified to the firm confidence of China and the Chinese people in Xi’s leadership and grand vision for the future. He said cooperation between the Philippines and China will be further strengthened.

Republic of Korea (ROK) President Moon Jae-in said he wishes that under Xi’s leadership, China will realize the Chinese Dream and make a greater contribution to peace and development in Northeast Asia and the world at large. With this year marking the 10th anniversary of the establishment of ROK-China strategic cooperative partnership, Moon said he would like to make efforts with Xi to steer bilateral relations toward maturity and into a new era.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a message congratulating Xi, said: “I wish you ... new achievements in the important post of Chinese president.” And “I am confident that with the joint efforts of both sides, we will surely further consolidate and enrich the Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination.” 

Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud spoke highly of the friendship between the two countries, saying that Saudi Arabia wants to push bilateral cooperation in all areas.

Capable leadership

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena congratulated Xi on his election, saying he firmly believes that under the capable leadership of Xi, Sri Lanka and China will strengthen their confidence in cooperation and push for all-around development of bilateral relations.

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said that Xi’s unanimous election has fully demonstrated the people’s absolute trust in his excellent leadership, adding that under Xi’s wise leadership, China will continue to prosper.

Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang said that he believes Xi will lead the Chinese people to realize the goal of building a great modern socialist country that is prosperous, strong, democratic, culturally advanced, harmonious and beautiful.
